Ex-SLAYER Drummer DAVE LOMBARDO's New Solo (Video)
July 1, 2014Gnagna Drum has uploaded video footage of a drum solo by former SLAYER and current PHILM and AMEN drummer Dave Lombardo. Check it out below.
Lombardo currently plays a custom-made kit built by Ludwig, after previously working with Tama and ddrum. "I had left Tama and I was with this other company, and it didn't work out," he told GuitarCenter.com. "I was on the fence, and everybody said, 'Oh, you can go with any company you want.' But I wanted to make it special, and something that I connect with. Then Kelly Paiste asked me, 'What drummers did you look up to, and what did they play?' Basically, all those guys played Ludwig. So she goes, 'There it is. There's your answer.'"
The drummer told GuitarCenter.com that he has actually reduced the size of his kit a bit after he was last in the studio with SLAYER. "Since the last SLAYER record, I removed two toms," Lombardo said. "The right part of the drum set is reminiscent of a 4-piece John Bonham kit — floor tom, rack tom, snare and bass drum. But then you add a second bass drum and two or three toms over here, and you add another floor tom so that the 4-piece has now expanded. But I focus on the right bass drum and the traditional 4-piece configuration in my playing. Everything else is bells and whistles."
Lombardo recently joined AMEN, the band led by frontman Casey Chaos, for the recording sessions of a new studio album and a U.K. tour. The refreshed AMEN lineup — completed by John Fahnestock on bass, Duke Decter and John King on guitars — is recording the new CD with longtime producer Ross Robinson (KORN, LIMP BIZKIT, SEPULTURA).
Lombardo sat out SLAYER's Australian tour in February/March 2013 due to a contract dispute with the other members of the group. Filling in for him was Jon Dette (TESTAMENT, ANTHRAX). Dave has since been replaced in the band by Paul Bostaph, who was SLAYER's drummer from 1992 until 2001 and recorded four albums with the group.
